The city of Troy dates back to the Dutch in the 1630s, when Kiliaen van Rensselaer (yes, the same Rensselaer who the county is named after) owned the land where the city now stands. However, Troy as we know it today wasn’t officially named that way until 1789 - and didn’t become a town until 1791, when it was taken out of Rensselaerswyck (what a mouthful). And yes, Troy was named after the legendary city of Troy.
Troy’s history really took off in the 19th and early 20th century, as it became not only one of New York State’s most prosperous cities, but also one of the most prosperous cities in the whole country. Troy sat as the central point where shipments from Vermont came to the Hudson for travel down to New York City and steamboats frequently visited the city.
On top of this, Troy was an early giant in the steel industry, with the very first American Bessemer converter. This early emphasis on industry lead to widespread growth in engineering, which today continues to expand as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has called Troy home since 1824, which is renowned for it’s prowess in science and technology and today culminates in the Nano Complex activities and research into nano science.
Much like Schenectady, Troy has seen a strong revival interest in the past few years, revitalizing a lot of the historic homes and offices in and around the downtown area. Troy is also home to Oakwood Cemetery, one of America’s largest rural cemeteries. Oakwood is the final resting place of many of the area’s most prominent citizens, including “Uncle Sam” Wilson, the original Uncle Sam! Uncle Sam's spirit may also live on at Uncle Sam Lanes, a bowling alley nearby.
Troy homeowners, property managers and business owners have trusted Infinite Roofing with their siding, roofing and windows projects for 20 years.
Roofing Troy - Replacements, Repairs and Historic District Compliant
Troy’s major revitalization since the introduction of the nano sciences and the expansion of the art community, fueled by RPI has lead to dramatically more renovation and expansion of the city at large.
However, the historic nature of Troy’s building architecture leads to a lot of flat roofs in the downtown areas, while more victorian style homes contain a lot of steeper pitch shingle roofs. It requires a certain type of roofing company to be able to handle this kind of diversity while taking into consideration the brutal winters typical of the Capital Region.
What that usually means is that extra installation (6 feet is standard by Infinite Roofing, versus 3 feet) of protective Ice and Water Shield (goes underneath shingles and protects the roof deck from moisture damage in areas where a lot of water hits (such as near the gutters)) is warranted for most installations where we’re doing a shingle roof.
On the flat roofing side, the choice usually comes down to EPDM and TPO versus old modified bitumen roofs - which are prone to more ponding water issues than the more modern alternatives (which becomes a big deal when you have as many rain storms as we get, combined with snow melt).
Either way, you’re going to want your roofing company to be able to walk you through the best options that also meet the best aesthetics possible for your home or business and meet historical standards (if in a historic district).
Infinite Roofing can walk you through all of these processes without an issue thanks to serving Troy for 20 years as certified professional roofing contractors.

City of Troy Roofing & Siding Revitalization Programs
As a resident of Troy (or as someone whose investigating the area to move to), I’m sure you’ve noticed the transformation over the past decade as new industries derived from tech have expanded into the area and the city’s rich tapestry has become increasingly revitalized.
SONYMA has introduced a dramatic new program called the Neighborhood Revitalization Program that gives homeowners access to extra capital to improve their homes - especially when it comes to siding, windows and doors and roofing!
This program usually provides up to $20,000 in additional assistance to renovate a hoome that you purchase AND can be combined with additional incentives that prevent things like tax increases from capital improvement offered by the State and local governments.
Working On Construction Projects in the Historic District of Troy
Generally, internal improvements like your bathroom remodel or replacing a broken window or things like this do not require approval or reviewing by the Commission. Exterior repair work also doesn’t fall into this category - so if for example, Infinite Roofing is coming out to do a roof repair for you, you do not need special approval for that kind of work.
However, the city of Troy has taken very seriously to the task of preserving the architectural heritage of Troy, so there are quite a few different projects that require review by the Commission (Landmark Review Commission).
The Commission does not force changes on you as a homeowner, however they do review external changes you plan on making. That means that when you go to make a change, such as installing new siding or putting in a new roof, it has to pass the Commission before construction can commence.
Generally they are going to look at a few things: does the change fit in with the aesthetic of the neighborhood and how does it affect the historic character of the building.
This process can be confusing and arduous without knowing how it all works before hand - especially when you combine situations like HUD loans (requiring specific building practices) and Historic District requirements. Infinite Roofing has been dealing with these kinds of projects for 20 years and our staff will smoothly bring you through this process without any problems.

New Seamless Gutters Increase Your Roof and Siding Lifespan
The single most common cause of rot in your home is bad gutters. See what happens is gutters get clogged and instead of the water draining and moving away from the home as intended, it accumulates in areas where you see a lot of water (e.g. the edge of the roof, your gutter area, the siding) and this water ends up, over time, getting in between vulnerable spots of your home and causing the joint areas to rot away.
This has lead to more costly repairs than we care to count. Although it may be good for our business, it's probably not the best choice for your pocket book.
Xtreme Gutter Guards fixes that problem with a patented seamless gutter system (with 20 year warranty!) that prevents your gutters from clogging ever again - meaning you no longer have to worry about rot, mildew or other water based damage around this area and you completely avoid the #1 reason for roofs and siding to prematurely age.
Troy Historic District Approved Siding Installation
For approval with Troy Historic District homes and properties, we install James Hardie Fiber Cement siding which closely replicates the original aesthetic and character of the original buildings (j-channel siding and vinyl siding cannot be used in historic districts). For non historic district homes and properties - the options vary wider, Certainteed's vinyl siding is impressive and is nearly indistinguishable from real wood while lasting much longer!
Whether you choose vinyl or fiber cement as your option for your buildings siding, we'll come out and give you a full design consultation to make sure that your aesthetic is matched in your buildings appearance (and that any special requirements (such as approvals by the Commission for historic homes) are fulfilled so you don't have to worry).
With every type of siding we install, our team of contractors are all 100% certified by the manufacturers - James Hardie and Certainteed, where we're one of the few contractors in the Capital Region fully endorsed by both to properly handle siding projects. What this means for you is that the job is going to be installed properly, your warranty is going to be maintained and you're going to get the fully advertised life span of the product when Infinite Roofing does an installation.
